| Many of the lost Middlesex villages retain the heart of their old identity. Unfortunately, Acton isn’t one of them. In 1801, it was a parish of some 1400 souls comprising parish church and isolated hamlets and farms. After London swamped Acton, it was turned into a suburb of 71,000 people by 1931...
The church was rebuilt in Victorian times, with some wall tablets transferred from the old building. Of the church plate given by Lady Dudley in 1638-9, the flagon is the largest in Middlesex. Acton has an impressive seven railway stations bearing its name. Acton Town of 1933 is typical of the many variations on a theme designed by the London underground architect, Charles Holden in the 30s and 40s. For essentially functional buildings, the best have a pleasing elegance, as demonstrated here by the three two-light windows and the long, curved ground floor canopy. |
